Reflectance of Oil Paintings: Influence of Paint Layer Thickness and Binder Amount

Roughness, pigment impurities, and neoformed minerals are important factors affecting the reflectance of painted surfaces. However, other that have not yet been studied in detail, such as total thickness paint layer amount binder, should also be considered. In this research, oil painting mock-ups, each made with a different number layers containing single (lead white, orpiment, cinnabar, azurite or malachite) mixed proportions were examined using hyperspectral imaging system. The results indicate these characteristics do directly influence surface. Interestingly, we found distribution pigments binder system (and pigment-binder interaction) key to understanding values. Thus, accumulation on top uppermost multilayer mock-ups caused reduction reflectance. increased translucency lead white modified reflectance, possibly due formation metal soap.
